Matt Murdock looks for Hector Ayala’s killer and learns about people using the Punisher logo on their bullets. Matt confronts Frank Castle leading to the former vigilante preparing to take up the Daredevil mantle. Meanwhile, Mayor Wilson Fisk starts falling back into his Kingpin habits.

Legal Counsel

The episode begins with Matt collecting Hector’s personal belongings from the morgue after White Tiger’s murder. Hector’s niece comes down to try to see her uncle, but Matt and the Medical Examiner stop her. It still hints that she may take up the White Tiger mantle, which makes sense as they have hinted at a younger team for years and a young White Tiger would go well with Wiccan, Speed, Patriot, Hawkeye, Yelena Bolova, Ms. Marvel and any other younger hero Marvel chooses to introduce.

Meanwhile, Matt is preparing to meet with a man who was arrested for petty larceny. He runs into Officer Powell and tries to provoke the officer about Hector’s murder. Based on Powell’s heart rate, Matt is able to tell that Powell didn’t kill Hector. Still, the lawyer and officer are at odds with Powell threatening to turn Matt into his bosses for interfering with a case while Matt reminds Powell that he will need more help to take down Matt since Matt already took out two police officers by himself.

Punisher Returns

While investigating Hector’s murder, Matt finds the bullet casing since no shells were found in the body. He’s able to determine the bullet has the Punisher’s logo on it. He heads to see Frank Castle where the pair have it out with their often uncomfortable alliance. Frank knows there are people using his stuff despite the fact he never killed innocent people. Meanwhile, he also calls out that Matt wants permission to take up the Daredevil mantle that he gave up following Foggy’s death.

Frank, who knows something about motivation based on death, calls out Matt for not being able to say Foggy’s name. Eventually, Matt confronts his grief and he and Frank come to an understanding. It’s clear Matt is ready to be Daredevil again, which fans see as he starts testing out his workout gear and keeping touch with his helmets. And while the episode doesn’t bring Frank back as the Punisher, there are hints that he will return as the anti-hero.

Kingpin Returns

While this is going on, Wilson Fisk is trying to act like an upstanding Mayor. He goes to a school to hear children sing “We Built This City” and then goes to Latvian Heritage celebrations because he did well with the Latvian population in New York City in the election. Fisk feels out of place here, plus BB Urich has pounced on something that his protege, Daniel, let slip creating his first scandal. Daniel owns up to it, apologizes and pledges loyalty. Fisk promises not to fire him and gives him a second chance. It appears Fisk has turned over a new leaf.

However, during couples therapy, it’s clear that he and Vanessa still aren’t on the same page and a lot of it has to do with Adam, the man Vanessa had an affair with while Fisk was in the hospital. Heather asks Vanessa if she is worried about Fisk, but Vanessa is certain Fisk won’t, and even can’t, hurt her. Still, the end of the episode reveals that Fisk goes to his own hideout where he’s keeping Adam locked up. The old Kingpin is still around.

Rating

The series is kicking into high gear. Matt appears ready to be Daredevil again. Fisk is ready to be Kingpin again and take on vigilantes. Frank Castle is back, although it’s unclear how long it will take to see him as Punisher. Plus, the episode ends with the first appearance of Muse. The show is building as it welcomes a two episode night next week. This was my least favorite episode of the first four and it’s still one of the best episodes of Marvel TV we’ve gotten.
