GUMMIES

Riley finds pot gummies while Carter is hanging out with his friends leading to her overreacting. Meanwhile, Matt takes an unusual but understandable route in advice before taking action that neither Riley nor Carter expected.

Riley’s Reaction

Carter wants to bring some friends over to hang out which Riley supports because she wants him to feel at home. But Matt isn’t fond of people, however he agrees to let his grandson bring friends over. When they arrived, pot gummies fall out of one of their coats. While Matt seems like he would fly off the handle, he's actually the calmer of the two. Riley is the one who runs into the room to confront her son and his friends.

She wants to know which of the boys brought the pot gummies, thinking one of them is corrupting her son. Instead, she finds out Carter got the gummies when she dropped them, so they are hers that he took. This makes her reaction much funnier as she’s clearly being hypocritical. The next day, she turns to her coffee catch crew (Gabe and Stitch) for advice. However, Matt hears and advises his daughter to allow Carter to try the gummies under her supervision which shocks everyone involved.

Matt Discourages Carter

Riley decides to take Matt’s advice and allow Carter to try some of the pot gummy. However, she tries to give Carter a ton of information before allowing him to try one. This causes major issues as Matt has taken two pot gummies to try to take part with them. Matt is now high as a kite while neither Riley nor Carter have tried anything.

Matt starts acting funny as he hasn’t tried too much pot in years. However, it works exactly as Matt intended. Carter and Riley see Matt acting completely out of character, and Carter decides against trying the pot gummy at this time. Riley also admits that seeing her father high makes her not want to take them either.

Saving the Park

While this is going on, Riley’s boss, Eve, stops by the customization shop to ask for support for a local park. Matt seems to push everything aside while Gabe and Stitch offer up some of their services: Gabe will customize a car while Stitch also works as a DJ. While thoughtful, neither of their offers are bringing in a lot of money at the auction raising money for the park. They talk about offering a ride in a car but Eve uses a car that belongs to Jay Leno rather than one of their own cars.

Stitch and Gabe go over to tell Matt what happened not realizing that Matt is high. Matt praises them both and allows them to leave. The next day, they tell him what he said, but Matt remembers nothing. Stitch tells Jay Leno what happened in a very odd manner, and Jay just accepts it. He then tells Matt that Matt called him acting odd. Matt claims it’s a comedy bit, but Jay references a 90s show with someone who looked like Matt even with Matt’s mannerisms but was much funnier, giving a nice homage to Home Improvement.

Rating

At the end of the show, Eve stops by to talk to Matt about his unwillingness to take part in the auction. He tries to play himself off as an old, conservative grump but Eve lets everyone know that Riley told her that Matt has donated privately to the park for years ensuring its cleanliness. Matt claims “drill baby drill” but Eve hints there’s more to him than meets the eye. This is perfect as the show is clearly setting them up as star-crossed love interests with him being a conservative and her being a liberal hippy.

There is some great character development here for several characters. Matt is shown to be chill for once. Riley is shown to be overprotective for once. And Carter is shown to be a typical teen for once. It’s a strong entry in this series.
