Typhoid Georgie

Georgie works himself sick and ends up seeing his father during his illness induced dreams. Meanwhile, Mandy gets a chance to jump back into her career and her mother shows support that hasn’t been seen in a while.

George Cooper Returns

The episode starts with Georgie sneezing and blowing his nose a lot. He insists it’s allergies, but the McAllisters believe he’s coming down sick. Georgie tries to fight through the illness at work, insisting that his dad never took time off, so he shouldn’t either, but ends up sneezing in a coworker’s face. Jim sends Georgie home where Connor offers to take care of him. Georgie has a fever dream where he’s back in his parents’ kitchen and sees his father who died in the final season of Young Sheldon. George berates his son in his dream telling him that he’s weak.

Georgie wakes up and tries to go back to work, but Connor steps in and threatens to get the special thermometer, a rectal one, to ensure Georgie listens. Georgie goes back to bed and has another fever dream. In this one, he talks to his father and confronts the fact that his father isn’t there for him anymore and he wants to be around for CiCi. Dream George understands that allowing Georgie to overcome his guilt for taking a day off and giving him a nice moment with his father even if it’s only in a fever dream form.

Mandy’s Return to TV

While Georgie is sick, Mandy receives an offer to return to television as a fill-in meteorologist. Before meeting Georgie, she served as the meteorologist, but the twists and turns with an unexpected pregnancy, getting married and money struggles led to her having to work as a waitress. She jumps at the opportunity, but most of her dress clothes are old and out of style, so Audrey offers to take her shopping for a new outfit.

During the bonding time, Audrey shows some of the most support for Mandy we’ve seen since the McAllisters were introduced on Young Sheldon. Audrey helps buy new clothes and takes time to learn about the training Mandy had to undergo to be qualified to work as a meteorologist. Audrey takes time to learn about the job and the skills it requires and helps relay that information to the rest of the family. Audrey and Mandy have been at odds since Mandy got pregnant, but much like when she helped turn a home office into a nursery for Cici, Audrey proves she believes in her daughter even if she has a funny way of showing it.

Rating

This episode went a long way in developing the characters of Audrey and Connor while also giving fans of Young Sheldon a treat with George’s return. Audrey has come across rude and unpleasant, but here she is the most supportive of her daughter’s attempt to get back into the career for which she went to college. She’s shown numerous times she loves her daughter and knows what Mandy can do, she just wants to see her do it. Unfortunately, she doesn’t show the same support for Georgie which is going to continue causing strain on Georgie and Mandy’s marriage. Of course, The Big Bang Theory taught us that Georgie goes on to be the best tire salesman in the state of Texas, so Audrey is missing the boat on him.

Meanwhile, Connor shows an affinity for nursing. Throughout much of the first season, he’s been adrift as a 26-year-old living in an apartment above his parents’ garage. However, he takes care of Georgie and knows when to have a calm bedside manner and when to get tough. That may help him as this series continues. Plus, it’s great to see George Cooper in this way. Obviously, he can’t return physically, so it will have to be dream sequences. Hopefully, this is a limited use, however. While I like when characters return in dream form, it usually only works as a one-off or very limited in non-supernatural series. Only Chet Hunter in Boy Meets World worked in this format, so here’s hoping they don’t try to overdo it with George. Still, another strong episode for this series.
