What If... Agatha Went to Hollywood?

Agatha Harkness takes over the Golden Age of Hollywood but must team up with the Prime Eternal, and King of Bollywood, to help protect the Earth from the Celestials.

Agatha the Movie Star

This Autumn’s hit Marvel series, Agatha All Along, showed the popularity of the witch known as Agatha Harkness. But what if the woman who inspired Dolly Parton to write Jolene (in the MCU) used her powers to take over Hollywood? Agatha Harkness is the biggest movie star on the planet as she embarks on the biggest movie of all time.

Howard Stark serves as director of the film and is encouraging her to bring on a big name co-star. The movie execs, most notably Jarvis, want extra star power and while Agatha has initially been against working with other big names. However, she figures out she needs to work with someone because you can steal the spotlight if there’s no one to steal it from. So Agatha and Howard turn to the King of Bollywood.

The King of Bollywood

Agatha and Howard call in Kingo, the greatest actor in the history of Bollywood, and one of THE Eternals to help provide the Hollywood/Bollywood magic. It’s nice to see references to  Eternals making their way into Marvel programming. The movie might not have fared well but there’s still a place for the characters the film introduced.

Kingo already knows that Agatha Harkness is a witch who cast a spell over the world to become the most famous movie star in Hollywood. He also knows that Agatha is aware of Tiamut’s presence in the Earth and is hoping to siphon the Celestial’s powers, and she’s already bound all the other Eternals and conquered their power. Kingo is the last one remaining.

He’s ready to battle her on the screen and on the dance floor. The pair make magic together, both as actors and using their actual magical powers. As Howard says “Will they dance? Will they fight? The answer is Yes!”

Surprise Reveals

After making magic together, it’s time for surprise reveal after surprise reveal. Kingo reveals to Agatha that he knows she’s seeking Tiamut’s power. Agatha reveals to Howard and the movie executive about the existence of the Eternals and that Kingo is one. King confirms he’s an Eternal.

Howard then reveals he knew about both and wanted them to really fight each other so he could save money on effects by using real magic. Howard Stark is proving time and time again to be the MCU version of Howard Hughes from his knowledge of science to his pop culture prowess.

Meanwhile, Arishem has been keeping an eye on Earth and once Kingo agrees to relinquish his powers to Agatha, for a three picture deal, Arishem heads to Earth ready to battle Agatha and punish Kingo for his “treachery.”

Agatha vs. Arishem

Kingo and Agatha perform the ritual giving Agatha the power of all the Eternals and the Celestial, Tiamut. She transforms into her own Celestial being just as Arishem arrives for battle. The pair face off and it appears like Arishem is winning, however, it’s a trick by Agatha. Just like in Agatha All Along, she shows how she sucks powers from the magical, whether they be witches or Celestials.

Agatha now has the power of two Celestials and plans to seek more. Despite pretending to be altruistic in her claims that she planned on fighting Celestials to save Earth, Agatha will always be greedy and lustful for power. Of course, there’s only one true way to stop her.

Agatha, the Narcissist

With Agatha threatening to seek more power, Kingo comes up with a plan to stop her. She wants to be the star, just like him. He knows his narcissism and knows she is just as narcissistic. So he convinces her to relinquish her power to instead truly be the greatest star Hollywood has ever known.

The world is saved, but Agatha warns to look out for the sequel. Meanwhile, the Watcher teases both a happy ending and a cliffhanger as three more Celestials arrive at the edge of space staring down at Earth.

Rating

After a disappointing first episode to this final season, What If…? rebounded with episode two. The Mech Avengers tried too hard to focus on the new team while the second episode takes two characters that have shined on screen but had little interaction and made them both the focus. This is where What If…? shines. This may be my favorite episode of the series, ever. Give me more Agatha and Kingo.

Check out What If…? streaming exclusively on Disney Plus.
