Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage: Episode 3 Review

Secrets, Lies and a Chunk of Change

Georgie gets a new credit card which leads to a revelation from Mandy, and it’s the kind of reveal that could lead to a marriage becoming someone’s “first marriage.”

Mandy’s Credit Card Debt

When Georgie gets a credit card and decides to take Mandy out for a nice dinner, she warns him about the pitfalls of a credit card. He insists the dinner is a one time thing, and they will be returning to the Taco Bell dollar menu for any other dinners out. Of course, this is a sitcom and there has to be some sort of conflict.

While it seemed like the show would follow the path of Georgie racking up a lot of debt, instead it revealed that Mandy had racked up a lot of debt when she was younger. She reveals she owest $12,000 which leads to an obvious fight between Georgie and Mandy. Mandy insists that it’s her problem, but he points out that since they are married, it’s his problem too. After showing him the bills and explaining her shopping problem, he finds one charge that he feels like he can rectify.

Mandy’s ex-boyfriend

That charge was an emergency room visit for Mandy’s ex-boyfriend. Georgie is determined to get the money back, but Mandy refuses to give him the name, wanting to move on. Georgie finally gets the name from Mandy’s Dad and seeks out the boyfriend to get the money. This interaction highlights some major issues that will eventually doom the marriage.

While trying to get the money, Georgie has already gone behind Mandy’s back. Plus, her ex-boyfriend comments on how young Georgie looks, bringing the age gap back into focus. Mandy’s ex writes a check that Georgie goes to cash, and in a move that surprises no one, not even Georgie, the check is bad. He runs into Mandy’s ex entering the bank who is determined to rob the bank to get Georgie and Mandy the money. Georgie runs away, not wanting to be a part of what’s about to happen.

Georgie and Mandy’s Plans

Realizing they have to find a way to buckle down and pay off Mandy’s debt, both Georgie and Mandy come up with ideas. Mandy starts working at a diner to make some money, but she has a breakdown when a couple is there with a little boy who is the same age as CiCi. She hates that she’s missing time with her little girl.

Meanwhile, Georgie wants to use the tow truck that Mandy’s father owns to make more money for the shop. He offers to be on call for the tow truck so Mandy’s dad doesn’t have to drive it at night, and gets some help from police officers who are friendly with his Meemaw. The end of the episode hints that this will be very helpful for the family, but there’s still some obvious major problems. When Georgie and Mandy go to bed after making plans, it’s clear that they are both hiding more secrets despite the fact they are saying “no more secrets.” Georgie’s is about visiting Mandy’s ex, but what is Mandy’s other secret?

Connor’s Subplot

During the episode, there’s not a true B plot, but there is a subplot that is referenced through Mandy’s brother, Connor. He claims to be friends with Jay Leno due to them having the same birthday and reaching out. His family just shrugs off his statements as crazy. The end tag of the show reveals Jay Leno left a message on the answering machine asking Connor to go to Los Angeles and sit in with the Tonight Show band. It’s a funny moment punctuated by the fact it was clearly Jay Leno’s voice and not a Jay Leno impersonator on the answering machine.

Rating

This is the first episode to not feature a former Young Sheldon character, and the episode is better for it. Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage has to stand on its own. It can’t forget its Young Sheldon roots, but it can’t be too tied to the nest either. Still, the episode was only okay. There were funny moments, but the episode still isn’t carrying me. I like it and will keep watching it. But this hasn’t drawn me in to where I have to see it.
