Nicholas Scratch

The episode begins with Agatha in the past about to give birth when Rio approaches. Agatha and Rio are a couple at this point, but Rio is there to take the child. Agatha begs for her child to be spared, but Rio explains that she can’t spare him, but she can give Agatha time.

Agatha raises Nicholas, her son she created from scratch. Together they create the song that would go on to become the Ballad of the Witches’ Road. They also work together to capture witches. Agatha is draining the witches’ powers and leaving the bodies for Rio, as Death, to take. She’s trying to keep her son alive longer by sacrificing other witches. This mother’s love gives her a bit of redemption but doesn’t change the fact her actions are selfish.

As Nicholas gets sicker, he makes sure more witches don’t succumb to the same fate as others. Agatha and Nicholas spend the night camping in the woods when Rio comes to take Nicholas. He knows he’s dying at this point and is ready to go. He kisses Agatha goodbye and leaves while she sleeps. Agatha wakes up and realizes her son is gone and she is hurting.

Agatha the Villain

A young witch overhears Agatha singing the song and asks for help finding the Witches’ Road. Agatha and the young witch gather a coven to sing the song, but when it’s done, she verbally chides them ensuring they attack her. This is how she sucks their powers dry and kills them, just like she did with Alice earlier in the series.

As the show goes through a montage of covens, the truth is revealed that Agatha never walked the Witches’ Road, because it didn’t exist. She conned young, naive witches and drained them of their powers, leaving their bodies behind for Rio. At this point, she’s not doing it to protect Nicholas, she’s just evil. She’s trying again with this latest coven when the door to the Witches’ Road appears beneath them. As the writer of the song, and the greatest con artist in witchcraft, she’s as surprised as any of them to see the door. This is what turns her on to the possibility that there was more to Teen, as she knew him then, than meets the eye.

Agatha’s New Form

The series shifts to the present where a ghostly form of Agatha is floating in Billy’s bedroom. She reveals to Billy that he manifested the road. As Billy is having a breakdown over the deaths of Alice, Lilia and Sharon/Mrs. Hart, Agatha points out that she killed Alice and Lilia sacrificed herself. Unfortunately, she isn’t able to console Billy on Sharon/Mrs. Hart, because that one was all him. Plus, a nice throwback to Billy asking if he was responsible for Sharon and Agatha asking “who?” She still hasn’t learned this woman’s name.

As Agatha tries to adjust to her new ghostly form, Billy returns to Westview. He wants to make sure Agatha goes on past this form. Agatha keeps fighting him on the issue until she reveals that she can’t go to where Nicholas is. It’s never explained why, but in my opinion, she can’t handle seeing her son in the afterlife as he didn’t approve of her killing witches, and she killed so many after his death.

Still, Agatha and Billy reach an understanding that ends with them going off on an adventure together.

Jen’s Fate

A small deviation from Agatha and Billy is the fate of Jennifer Kale. She disappeared after unbinding herself in episode 8. This episode reveals she dragged herself from the ground and flew away. In the comics, Jennifer Kale is a powerful witch who fights alongside Dr. Strange to fight off the dark mystical side of Marvel. I’m interested to see if she returns beyond this series.

Series Rating

First and foremost, this series finale felt more like an epilogue than a finale. The episode only gets 3 stars from me. Still, it was strong storytelling that explained Agatha’s motivations and helped establish that Billy as Wiccan is similar to his mother, Wanda, was as the Scarlet Witch, while demonstrating how he’s different from her too.

This series introduced us to some great new characters. As I mentioned, Jennifer Kale can certainly reappear. Rio Vidal as Death is another character who can’t actually die, so she could return. Plus, they gave us a way to keep Agatha around. It’s sad we lost Alice and Lilia as they were a lot of fun, but I’m thankful we got them.

Paul Bettany, who plays Vision in the MCU, says Agatha All Along serves as a bridge between the events of WandaVision and the events of the Vision solo series that is set to begin filming soon. In that instance, it was an excellent series to bridge that gap. Still, we came out of it with the most interesting new character in Billy Maximoff’s Wiccan. We’ve already seen some of the Young Avengers introduced in the MCU, and The Marvels even hinted at Kamala Khan and Kate Bishop forming the team. But, if the Young Avengers are forming, they will need the other half of the Maximoff twins. So as Agatha said to end the series, “Let’s go get Tommy!”

The entire series gets:
