A Sportsbook and a Breakup

Mandy runs into Georgie’s meemaw, Connie, who is back to breaking the law with gambling, and this time Mandy gets sucked into the illegal activity. The revelation leads to a fight between Connie and Dale.

Illegal Sportsbook

Mandy is waiting tables with her least favorite recurring customer, the cheapskate who doesn’t want to pay for anything, when she sees Connie outside the diner at a payphone. She goes to say high when Connie starts acting suspicious. She deduces that Connie is using the payphone for something that will get her in trouble, and Connie admits that she’s running a sportsbook. Given this is Texas in the 1990s, gambling is illegal.

Still, Mandy is looking for ways to contribute more to her family, so she asks Connie to cut her in. She becomes the person taking calls on a beeper for her grandmother-in-law, but this causes problems at home. When the pager goes off during dinner, Jim and Audrey become suspicious since pager sounds normally mean Georgie needs to go out to tow a broken down vehicle. Mandy has to keep her cover by pretending she heard Cici crying when no one else did to answer the gambler.

Break Up

While this is going on, Connie’s boyfriend, Dale, has noticed her odd behavior. He stood by her when she got busted running the illegal casino behind her laundromat, but he doesn’t want her to take risks with other forms of gambling. He comes to Georgie to explain what he’s seen. Georgie wants to keep quiet to protect both his grandmother and his wife, however, he also doesn’t want to lie to Dale who has figured out something involving gambling is up. After suggesting maybe Connie was cheating, Georgie admits that she’s running a sportsbook and tries to tell Dale to look on the bright side, “at least she ain’t cheatin’.”

Dale and Connie have a fight over her illegal activity which leads Dale to come visit the McAllister’s with some of Connie’s stuff that he wants to give to Georgie. He tells Audrey about the sportsbook which leads to Audrey accusing Georgie of helping his grandmother again. However, Jim notices how much Mandy has been paying attention to high school sports and figures out she’s the one involved, not Georgie. Mandy comes home to find the heartbroken and drunk Dale asleep on the couch and offers to help him to try to keep her cover. Eventually, Dale runs back to Connie asking her to take him back. Despite the fact that he was completely in the right, he misses her too much.

Rating

This was arguably the best episode of the series, so far. Annie Potts has nailed the role of Connie since she was first cast on Young Sheldon, so it’s always great to see her step back into the role. Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage needs to stand on its own while not forgetting what came before it. It’s a hard road to walk, but recurring visits from Connie, Dale, Mary and Missy can help it keep its Young Sheldon feel, just so long as they don’t overtake the new show’s tone. This visit perfectly encapsulates what was necessary to pay tribute to Young Sheldon while keeping Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage its own thing.
