Ghosts: Season 4 Episode 12 Review

It's the End of the World as We Know It and What Were We Talking About?

Jay’s restaurant is set to open, but it falls on the date that Flower’s cult leader told her the world was going to end. Thinking she’s saving Sam and Jay, she turns to the basement ghosts to try to stop the opening.

Preparing to Open

Sam, Jay and Bela are excited as they prepare to open the restaurant on the Woodstone Manor property. Jay’s dreamed of being a chef and now he gets his chance. When they say the date, February 13, 2025, it triggers a memory in Flower. When she was in the cult, the leader, Bruce, told the cult the world would end on this date. This was a scam, of course, as he was a creep who convinced couples to join so he could be alone with the wives while the husbands slept outside. Still, between the brainwashing and the drugs, Flower’s ghost is convinced it’s real.

She spends the majority of the episode trying to convince Sam, and the other ghosts, that Jay has to postpone the opening. Everyone shrugs her off, because they know it was a lie made up by the cult leader at the time. Seemingly, out of options, she tells the basement ghosts about her belief. They like Flower and are willing to help, revealing their ghost power in the process… giving people cholera. The ghosts run through the Jay’s staff of kitchen workers, getting them all sick and forcing them to leave, seemingly ruining the opening.

Trevor and Hetty

While preparing for the opening, the ghosts are trying to sort out who gets to sit at the ghost table, a non-negotiable part of the deal for Isaac investing in the restaurant. Initially, Trevor and Isaac will be there. Thor is cut out when Alberta mentions he smells of wolf urine and no one will want that. Flower pulls herself out since she’s romantically entangled with Thor (this is before she learned the date), and Pete removes himself since he can leave the property and has been to other restaurants. Eventually, Trevor gives the spots to Alberta and Sas, knocking Hetty out of the mix.

This leads to a back-and-forth between Hetty and Trevor. Hetty convinces Isaac to give up his spot, but Trevor convinces Isaac he’ll want Hetty with him and gives the spot to Baxter, one of the British ghosts living in the shed. Hetty convinces Baxter to give up the spot since Baxter had been with Nigel who is also Isaac’s ex-fiance. Eventually, it’s revealed that Trevor’s targeting Hetty because he feels betrayed due to how their romance ended. Hetty hurt her and he hasn’t been ready to forgive her. Still, they come to an agreement to be “power friends” to look down on the other ghosts.

Ghosts to the Rescue

Sam and Jay are understandably angry with Flower given her actions she thought would save the day. After the sun goes down, Flower realizes what she’s been told is wrong but can’t figure out why. Sam finally tells her the cult was a scam which causes Flower to run off crying about the danger she’s caused. Sam goes to check on her, and she explains how she often felt like an outcast and was looking for somewhere she belonged. The ghosts point out she’s found her family, and it’s them. She belongs with the ghosts.

The ghosts, as they often do after messing up the business for Sam and Jay, find a way to save the day. With just Jay, Sam, Bela and Mark around, the ghosts relay to Sam what needs to be done and the four of them make the opening a success. This is a bit odd since Mark doesn’t know that Sam can see ghosts, but still he doesn’t question anything and listens to Sam’s leadership. Jay offers words of gratitude to all who attend the opening and Isaac ends up in the wrong place when he tries to offer something similar. One of the waiters walks through him, leading to the horrible smell that is his ghost power. Sam takes responsibility for the smell and the ghosts comment how there’s nothing she won’t do to cover for them.

The next day, the cooks are back. One of them mentions the symptoms matched cholera, but Jay is able to place the blame on lettuce they all ate. It’s always the lettuce farmers who suffer.

Rating

Another week, another way for the ghosts to mess up what Sam and Jay are trying to build. It’s been the running theme for four seasons, and it still delivers more often than it fails. We learn about a new ghost power but hopefully one we don’t see used too often. Pete, Trevor and Sas have useful powers. Thorfinn and Alberta’s power can be haunting or useful. Isaac’s power is gross and needs to be used sparingly. Hopefully, the basement ghosts' powers fall into the same category as Isaac’s power. Still, it’s got heart. It’s got humor. It’s another win for Ghosts.
