Nina’s Backstory

Much like the other episodes of Creature Commandos, this one features flashbacks to explain how Nina came to be at Belle Reve. The fish-like creature was born a human child but her lungs were growing on the outside of her body. Her father built a machine so she could breathe and worked with her to try to make her life easier, but her mother feels like they condemned her and leaves the family.

Her father uses his science background studying aquatic animals to try to heal her but it gives her gills and she can only breathe underwater. She goes to school where she’s mocked by most of her classmates. She decides to leave and go live in the water. However, a photographer catches an image of her and she’s captured. Her father tries to talk to her but the police shoot and kill him while she’s taken away to her future life at Belle Reve.

Eric Tries to Warn The Bride

Eric Frankenstein remains convinced he and The Bride are soulmates because his creator also created her originally for him before getting with his own creation. He’s convinced she will love him, but she continues to make it clear she never will. While Task Force M tries to escape after performing reconnaissance, Eric reaches out to warn them. However, The Bride just shoots him until he’s no longer a problem.

Eric disappears until the end credits scene where the post credit scene shows him eating lunch with bogdana, the older woman who rescued him when the bride fled after eric killed dr. victor frankenstein. It's a funny scene but takes on a dark humor tone when you realize eric kills bogdana so she's never alone when he leaves her.

Attempted Assassination

After working on a plan, Dr. Phosphorus burns through the wall surrounding the palace and the team plans to attack while Princess Ilana is swimming. Weasel thinks the Princess is nice while the others plan to finish the mission. Since it’s underwater, the Bride insists on Nina finishing the job. Unfortunately, Weasel finally gets through to warn the Princess.

Seeing Weasel, Ilana realizes something is wrong and spots Nina. A fight ensues underwater and Ilana overpowers Nina stabbing her with the very knife the fish-like woman planned to use on the Princess. The Bride walks into the water where she sees the blood only to see Nina’s body float to the top. As she mourns her friend, she gets a call from Amanda Waller who informs the team they found Flag was right about Clayface impersonating the Amazonian expert and the attack on the Princess was a mistake of a call. It appears Nina has now died for nothing.

The Bride Figures It Out

Back at the castle, the Royal Knights of Pokolistan keep petting Weasel and thanking him as a hero who saved the Princess. The Bride and Dr. Phosphorus sit off to the side with Phosphorus complaining about how Weasel’s being treated: he upended their mission and bit Phosphorus’ arm. He’s clearly jealous but also doesn’t really care about anyone or anything in the country.

The Bride goes for a walk and sees Princess Ilana. They go to her royal quarters where Ilana says she holds no ill will to the team. They thought they were saving the world. The Bride then reveals that during reconnaissance, she saw Clayface meeting with the Princess. The Bride deduces that Circe’s vision was accurate and the Princess is seeking to take over the world. The Bride admits she doesn’t care about the world but she did care about Nina. The Bride kills Princess Ilana then gathers Phosphorus and Weasel to walk out of the castle and leave the country before everyone figures out the Princess is dead.

Rating

The first season ends with The Bride being shown her new team. While Phosphorus and Weasel are back, we also see the Bat that bullied Nina earlier in the series, nosferata, has joined the team after being put in her place by The Bride when nosferata and congorilla were friendly. king shark from the suicide squad and khalis, the mummy, can be seen in the cell. G.I. Robot is also back with an upgrade and is ready to kill some more Nazis. Unfortunately, there’s no Gen. Flag and no Nina Mazursky with the team as the season ends.

This series was good but not great. There were some shining moments and some moments that genuinely made me question what I was watching in a bad way. It felt like they took a lot of the heart of X-Men 97 and tried to give it a Rated R makeover. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it. The episode gets a solid 3 stars.
