The Tourmaline Necklace

While visiting her birthplace, the Bride and Nina run into Circe, the rogue Amazonian who has been attacking Pokolistan. Meanwhile, viewers learn about the Bride’s backstory and her marriage and rivalry with Eric Frankenstein.

History of the Bride

The main crux of the story is the Bride’s history. Viewers learn how Victor Frankenstein had created Eric, but now Eric wants a wife to love. Victor reluctantly agrees to create the wife, but the creation that would go on to become the Bride struggles with her reanimation. Eric wants to love her, but she’s frightened at the very sight of him. Meanwhile, Victor is trying to teach the Bride about life. Eric is unable to handle how close Victor is able to get to the woman he is supposed to love.

Eric’s jealousy keeps manifesting until he snaps after walking in on Victor and the Bride being intimate with each other. Eventually, Eric kills Victor saying the doctor and his “gift giving power” was what was keeping Eric and the Bride from being with each other. This sets off a centuries long rivalry where Eric is constantly chasing the Bride and she’s constantly fighting him off and running away.

Back at the Mansion

In the present, the fallout from Dr. Phosphorus' attempt to kill Flag and steal the detonator that shocks the monsters continues. Princess Ilana tries to tend to General Flag’s wounds and continues her quest to be intimate with the General. She keeps asking about older scars she sees that are clearly from battle before the one with Dr. Phosphorus. The questions allow her to touch Flag as she continues to seduce him. Eventually, Flag gives in to her temptation.

Outside the bathroom door, Weasel, Dr. Phosphorus and G.I. Robot are peeking through the keyhole as Ilana tends to Flag. Once the general gives in to her seduction, the team keeps Alexei, one of the princess’ guards away from the room until he completes the job, despite the fact that Alexei knows the Bride and Nina are gone and the team needs to help.

Circe Attacks the Bride

At the mansion, the Bride and Nina are looking for a tourmaline necklace that Victor gave the Bride not long before he was killed. However, Circe’s followers have learned two of the monster soldiers sent by the US government are separated from the others and wants to know where they are to attack.

As the Bride looks to be getting ready to leave after finding the necklace, she sees Circe preparing her attack. The pair try to fight off Circe and the Sons of Themyscira. The Bride proves herself to be adept at fighting off most people, however, she can’t get the better of Circe. Gen. Flag is trying to get the troops there as he is now aware they left the castle, but the episode ends with the Bride and Nina both laying on the ground, Nina struggling to breathe after a bullet pierced her fishbowl that covers her head.

Rating

Episode one may have felt like a store brand, yet more mature, version of X-Men 97, but this episode took the team in an entirely new direction. The storytelling of the Bride’s past with the cutting between her creation, her education and the present felt more like an episode of Lost. As the Bride comes first in the credits, it makes sense that we should learn more about her quickly, as she appears to be one of the main characters.

My question is: have they already killed off Nina? It’s an animated series about monsters who are much harder to kill than everyday people, so it may just be a red herring. Still, Nina was identified as a human with gills by the Bride in this episode. It’s clear most of the other creatures don’t think of Nina as a creature. Plus, in episode one, Waller identified Nina as the most level-headed, so her being taken out can create more conflict for the team to overcome. I don't know which I would prefer, but I’m definitely interested in where it’s going.
