the work retreat
Trevor finds a way to work from the great beyond and gets to meet his new coworkers when they have a retreat at the mansion. Meanwhile, Jay has to impersonate Trevor’s creation. And the other bored ghosts end up making up lies about Pete due to jealousy.
Trevor’s Job
Trevor’s ghost power makes it possible to resume his work in the finance world despite not actually being alive. He works remotely as part of a team. But when it’s time for the team to go on a work retreat, Trevor suggests Woodstone Manor. This works out well because he can finally meet his coworkers even though they can’t meet him. However, he’s going to need some help from the corporeal world.
Trevor and the other ghosts suggest Jay pretend to be Trevor. Jay resists because, as an Indian-American, he doesn’t really represent Trevor’s Jewish heritage. However, Trevor as an employee chose the name Michael Jackson so that anyone searching him on the internet would have trouble finding him so they don’t realize it’s not a living, breathing employee.
Michael Jackson
Jay comes into the work retreat and introduces himself as Michael Jackson. He tries to do everything that Trevor would do but he also notices how Trevor doesn’t know how things have changed in New York City since he died 20 years ago. Jay goes off script when talking about the best restaurants, because food plays more into Jay’s wheelhouse than it does Trevor’s. Trevor appreciates the parts of Jay that are making his Michael Jackson creation more appealing.
Unfortunately, when Sam whisks Jay away for a minute after Jay hints the innkeeper is into him, the coworkers reveal they thought Michael Jackson was going to be impossible to stomach. Trevor kept making 90s references that made him and his sense of style seem dated. Trevor overhears this entire conversation and feels disheartened that his coworkers don’t love him, they love Jay.
Trevor’s Legacy
Jay continues to pump up Trevor but rather than do it through Michael Jackson, he decides to elevate the legacy of the man, himself. When he explains he learned everything from Trevor, the coworkers note how Trevor is a legend in the finance world. In a callback to a season two episode, it was revealed that Trevor gave his pants to a fellow finance bro who was going through a hazing ritual. Trevor died that night, but the friend he helped never forgot him.
Hazing was stopped at financial retreats due to Trevor’s actions that night. NOW A RUN WITHOUT PANTS IS HELD FOR FUN WITH EVERYONE BEING ALLOWED TO TAKE PART. Everyone agrees that Trevor made his mark on the finance industry and left it better than he found it which is all we can really ask of anything we touch when we’re gone.
Lies and Innuendo
In the B plot, Sass and Hetty start targeting Pete due to jealousy. Pete keeps referencing his power to leave the estate which leads to anger and jealousy from the other ghosts. Sass and Hetty start telling the other ghosts that Pete is lying about the girlfriend he met when he went to the tropics. It leads to most of the other ghosts mocking him.
Sass, Hetty and Pete talk it out and Pete realizes that he can make some changes because he comes across as braggadocious. Meanwhile, Sam is able to look up Pete’s girlfriend and learn she is real, but in life she murdered her spouse and fled to the tropics. Of course, Pete can die again and she can’t leave, so he should have nothing to worry about, right?
Rating
This episode goes a long way in building relationships between Jay and the ghosts as well as revealing some qualities both redeeming and terrible about the ghosts. Trevor wanted to be a legend and played himself up as the finance bro who was motivated by greed. Still, every time he's the focus of an episode, we see a heart of gold. Pete has always been the target of bullies and that continues into his afterlife. Meanwhile, Hetty and Sass, who have often been some of the biggest bullies, prove to be villainous through their jealousy. They aren’t always villains, but they were in this episode.
Still, this episode finds a way to deliver laughs with heart while making every major character more well rounded than they were before. Well done!
