Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage: Episode 2 Review

Some New York Nonsense

Mandy considers going back to work and has to potentially consider jobs outside the area. Meanwhile, Georgie is barely keeping things together and seeks advice from his father in the latest episode of Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage.

The Return of George Sr.

The episode opens with Georgie visiting his father’s grave. George Sr. was an important part of Georgie’s life, but his passing in the penultimate episode of Young Sheldon means Georgie is now the Man of the Family. Georgie is also only 19 but married with a baby. He tells his father how well things are going and how he’s got everything under control. Anyone who has ever lived knows how much of a lie that is for anyone, much less a 19 year old thrust into a bunch of new responsibilities.

Georgie’s Health

Much of episode two focuses on how Georgie’s life is far from perfect. He’s living with his in-laws, and it’s clear that his mother-in-law doesn’t like him because she thinks he ruined her daughter’s life. His father-in-law has stepped in as a father figure providing decent advice as he too is just trying to survive life like Georgie is. Georgie also has issues with a coworker due to his position and relationship with his boss who is also his father-in-law. The coworker feels Georgie skipped him in line because he married the boss’s daughter, even though Georgie met Mandy before meeting her father. The coworker continuously picks on Georgie through the first two episodes.

Meanwhile, Mandy’s job interview doesn’t work out well because the station hired a younger woman to be their new meteorologist. This causes extra stress as Mandy must consider either changing careers or moving to another city for a meteorologist job. Georgie spends much of the episode popping antacids due to the stress. After a blow-up over the thought of moving, Georgie storms out of the house and starts feeling chest pains. He takes himself to the hospital where he thinks he’s having a heart attack but is diagnosed with a panic attack.

Once he returns, Mandy and her family try to be less stressful to Georgie given his medical episode. Plus, Georgie’s father recently died of a heart attack in the storyline, and it wasn’t the only one he had over the course of Young Sheldon. This may be a storyline to watch for this series as well.

The Return of Missy

Adding more stress to Georgie’s life is his sister, Missy. She became very rebellious in the later episodes of Young Sheldon and the rebellious streak appears to still be around in this series. She calls Georgie for a ride home from school after she gets suspended. She says she’ll find a way to keep it from her mother.

Georgie wants to help his sister and comes up with a plan to address her rebellious streak. She may be keeping secrets from her mother, but Georgie has her tell everything to their father’s headstone. Georgie says she has to tell one parent and while it leads to a bit of catharsis, Missy’s appearance still ends with her crying in Georgie’s truck and calling him a jerk for making her do that.

Rating

The episode ends with Georgie returning to his father’s grave and telling George Sr. that he’s got nothing under control and wonders how George Sr. made it look so easy. The truth is that it wasn’t easy for George Sr. and Mary while raising Georgie, Missy and Sheldon but they did what they had to do. That’s a lesson Georgie is going to have to learn through this series.

This episode is another perfectly fine episode for a perfectly fine show. Nothing in it is bad, but it doesn’t have the comedy chops of The Big Bang Theory or the heart of Young Sheldon, at least not yet. If this series weren’t in The Big Bang Theory universe, I doubt it would get greenlit. Still, the specter of those two series continues to hang over it through two episodes. It’ll need to do more to improve as a series.
