Coming up on December 2nd, 2024, the latest Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew, will premiere on Disney Plus. Original Star Wars content has been a constant on the streaming service as the very first episodes of The Mandalorian were available on the service on launch day back in November 2019. Since then, several series have been released exclusively to Disney Plus with mixed results. Some are beloved while others are reviled. But which is the best? Let’s rank the Star Wars Original Series available on Disney Plus.
7. The Book of Boba Fett
The second live action series announced for Disney Plus seemed like a dream come true for many Star Wars fans. There had been requests for more live action Boba Fett for years due to his escapades in the Expanded Universe. However, this series failed to deliver. Temeura Morrison, who played Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones, returned as Boba for The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. His appearance was easily the best part of the series.
Instead of being an exciting adventure about a character painted as the best and baddest bounty hunter in the galaxy, it turned into a plodding mess as he tried to take over as a Crime Lord with a conscience. The show got great when the Mandalorian showed up, but the actual Boba Fett storyline was disappointing at best and miserable at worst.
6. The Acolyte
Easily the most divisive series so far, The Acolyte, managed to bring out the worst in the fandom. The series got blitzed with a hate campaign before it ever aired an episode. Either in spite of this campaign, or because of it, the series premiere saw some of the highest numbers of any Star Wars show on Disney Plus. Unfortunately for The Acolyte, those numbers dwindled weekly leading to Disney canceling the series causing its fans to act out in a similar vein to those who attacked it before it aired.
As for the show itself, a series set in the High Republic, a time we hadn’t seen on screen previously, should’ve felt new and invigorating. Instead, the formulaic plot and production made it feel the same as any other series set during the prequel era. It doesn’t matter if it was made by George Lucas or Disney, it looked too similar to what we already saw previously. Add in a mostly by the numbers plot and even the excellently choreographed fight scenes couldn’t save this series. Fans may have said “let them cook,” but keeping this series alive would’ve given viewers salmonella.
5. The Bad Batch
The only animated original series put on Disney Plus, if you don’t count the final season of The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch follows a team of clone troopers known as The Bad Batch who don’t have inhibitor chips that force them to follow Order 66. The group breaks free when the Republic becomes the Empire and goes on the run while trying to find a place to hide out.
Overall, it’s a real hit or miss series that has great episodes but often feels bogged down trying to give an early explanation into how the events of Rise of Skywalker could even take place. Plus, a lot of season one, and a few episodes of season three, really feel like guest of the week episodes for Dave Filoni’s favorite characters.
4. Obi-Wan Kenobi
This series perfectly represents the definition of middling. There’s some truly great aspects to this series such as having Ewan McGregor back in his Jedi robes. But there are some truly terrible aspects, like Leia being kidnapped twice over the course of six episodes.
It’s an enjoyable but unnecessary series. If this show were never brought to light, nothing in the Star Wars world would change. Nothing is better or worse because this series exists, and nothing would be better or worse if it didn’t exist. It’s the Disney Plus equivalent of a holiday special that gives fans more time in the world without impacting it in any way.
3. Ahsoka
This series was another mixed bag for people who didn’t watch Star Wars: Rebels, the animated series that aired on Disney’s terrestrial television during the 2010s. Dave Filoni chose not to hold anyone’s hand with making this series, wanting you to instead watch his previous content. Some people were able to understand without watching Rebels. Others went back to watch the four season show understanding this was essentially season five of that show.
For those of us who watched Rebels, Ahsoka tended to hit most of the right notes. Seeing Hera, Chopper, Sabine and Ezra in live action brought joy to those of us who appreciate the best Star Wars animated series, yes Rebels is better than The Clone Wars. The only complaint would be that Thrawn seemed far weaker than he should based on his character in Rebels, but given they seem to be building to a movie featuring all these characters, as well as the characters from other shows, maybe we’ll see Thrawn look truly badass.
2. The Mandalorian
The very first Disney Plus Original show, The Mandalorian gave Star Wars fans a taste of a space western. Instead of following a Jedi on their battle with the Sith, this followed a Mandalorian bounty hunter who decides to protect a bounty rather than turn it in. It’s essentially what everyone wanted a Boba Fett series to be.
It gave a villain of the week feel while tying in a much larger story arc through the first two seasons. The Mandalorian allowed for impressive cameos without endangering the overall lore (at least until the awful Lizzo and Jack Black season three episode). While the third season had promise with the storyline of New Mandalore, a lot of the best parts took a back seat to Bo Katan’s character development.
1. Andor
The series I had the least expectations for wound up being the very best. When announced, Lucasfilm leaders said it would tell the story of Cassian Andor as he ends up joining the Rebellion while becoming the jaded fighter seen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. While it delivered on that promise, Tony Gilroy’s writing allowed the series to deliver on a lot more.
Star Wars isn’t known for its dialogue. Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill famously mocked the initial script of Star Wars to George Lucas. While other writers have made the dialogue passable, it’s been far from good. However, Gilroy delivered some of the best dialogue, not just in Star Wars, but in television as a medium. Between the “One Way Out” speech as the prisoners break out of the Imperial prison and Stellan Skarsgård’s excellent “My Sacrifice” monologue where he reveals he has villainized himself for the salvation of others, the writing is too good not to elevate to the top of the heap.
Those are my rankings. How do you rank the Star Wars series on Disney Plus?
