Career

Matt and Riley go to speak at Georgia’s career day, but it leads to an argument between Riley and Georgia. Meanwhile, Gabriel starts mentoring Carter when it comes to his feelings for a girl in his class.

Career Day

As Georgia needs parents to come in for career day, she asks both her mother and grandfather to share what they do. She makes it clear she thinks her classmates will love her grandfather’s stories. She pitches like Shark Tank to ensure Matt is on board. Once there, Matt shines with his stories about customizing cars. He also brings in props the kids love. Unfortunately, things take a downward turn when Riley gets up to give her presentation.

Riley is a receptionist at a dance studio, but Georgia has been telling people she’s a choreographer who has worked with Rihanna and Beyonce. Riley bursts everyone’s bubbles by being open about her job. It’s clear that Georgia has been lying and now she’s embarrassed that her stories are out in the open as it has hurt her standing with her classmates.

Georgia vs. Riley

Back at the house, Georgia is complaining to Matt about Riley embarrassing her. She says everyone thinks she’s a liar, which Matt points out, she is. Riley comes home and makes light of the situation with references to Beyonce and Rihanna. When Matt suggests Georgia is about to apologize, she instead complains to her mother about what happened. The fight between the pair gets so bad that Matt, a man who famously hates other people, says it’s the first time he’s ever been excited for someone to be at the door.

Gabriel is there to mentor Carter, but he notes how Riley and Georgia’s argument reminds him of when he was a teenager visiting and Riley and her own mother would be arguing. He notes Matt would always try to smooth things over and both his wife and daughter would unite against him. Recognizing the value of this, Matt goes in and interrupts their argument, making outlandish statements that are sure to cause any woman to stand opposed to him. This leads to a united Riley and Georgia until Matt leaves the room. From there, Georgia asks her mother to help with dinner and apologizes for her actions. Meanwhile, Riley has seen enough change in her father since she’s been there to know he didn’t mean a word he said and was working to repair her relationship with her daughter.

Gabriel Mentors Carter

While this was going on, Matt and Carter had been working to restore the car Matt got for his grandson. However, Gabriel notices Matt’s not very good at mentoring, especially since Matt was once his mentor. This is because Carter is distracted by his phone and Matt wants him off of it. Gabriel tries to step in to give Matt advice and he walks away and hands the job to Gabriel. This allows Gabriel to find out the real reason for the distraction is a crush on a girl, something Gabriel would legitimately be a better mentor for Carter than Matt.

Gabriel gives Carter advice on how to text the girl which leads to what Carter thinks is a date. He later finds out it’s a group hang rather than a date causing him to reach out to Gabriel for more advice. Gabriel helps guide him into going and promises that both Gabe and Stitch will be there for Carter no matter what happens. Carter goes and has fun then, the next day, he comes back to the garage to work on the car with Matt. The episode ends on a funny note because as Matt and Carter get ready to work on the car, Matt gets distracted by texts and Carter gives him the same response about not being distracted that Matt originally gave Carter.

Rating

Look at that, we finally get some character development for Georgia. She has been the most paint-by-numbers kid on a show, so far. I would call her one dimensional, but I’m not even sure she had one dimension before this episode. Hopefully we see more of her personality beyond liking Shark Tank and being there to cause trouble for her family. Meanwhile, Carter has grown over the past few episodes and continues to grow here. Plus, it shows more growth for Gabe as he takes on the mentor role. Carter needs a father figure and the show has hinted about feelings between Gabriel and Riley. If Gabriel is going to be worthy of Riley, he needs to be a father figure to her kids, and this episode went a long way in showing he can be that guy.
