Kids in Trouble
The episode begins with Jod introducing himself to the kids’ parents. He claims to be the Emissary from the Republic and a Jedi. He tells the parents the kids are in trouble and insists on the security droids watching them. Jod takes Fern and her mother to meet with the Supervisor where he learns the planet is run by a droid.

Jod gives the same spiel to the Supervisor that he did to the parents. This ends up backfiring because the last message the Supervisor received from what was once the Old Republic was the message that all Jedi were traitors. The Supervisor knows Jod is lying about something and that’s when Fern reveals that Jod is a pirate trying to steal the credits.
Jod is forced to defend himself and stabs the Supervisor in its eye. The droid is taken offline and that also leads to a power outage on the planet. This allows the rest of the kids who know Jod’s true motivations to step up and save their homeworld.
Rising to the Occasion
Jod wants to get his ship through the barrier. At first, he was going to use the switch that will destroy the barrier but Fern’s mother has a code that will allow it through. Jod is okay with this as he seems to not want major damage to the planet. He plans to enslave the workers to continue their “Great Work” just for his personal gain rather than as a mint for the Republic.
The pirates make it through the barrier and shoot anything they think might serve as a resistance to them. Meanwhile, Wim has relayed everything to his father and they are trying to find a way to help. The power outage means their vehicles don’t work, but KB and Wim arrive on their hover bikes which aren’t connected to the grid. KB reveals that Kh’ymm gave her a way to communicate with her but they need to get through the barrier for it to work.

During their travels to the ship, Neel gets separated from KB, Wim and Wim’s dad. He reasons they will need cover on the ground and runs to an old canon still on the planet. Unfortunately, the ship can’t take off due to the docking clamps being locked in place. Wim and his father go to the Supervisor tower where Wim provides a distraction so his father can help free the ship.
Jod Holds Them Hostage
Wim does a very poor job at trying to trick Jod, but it works long enough for a distraction to allow his father to turn the power on long enough to free the docking clamps. During this time, it’s revealed that KB has fixed SM-33, who Jod cut with a lightsaber in the last episode, and the droid is helping her fly the ship beyond the barrier. Her ship is nearly shot down by the pirates, but Neel rises to the occasion providing enough cover for her to escape. The pirates target the cannon and Neel flees to safety.

Back at the Supervisor’s tower, Jod has Wim, Fern and their parents held hostage. It’s unclear what will happen. However, Jod’s arrogance remains his undoing. He informs them that no help is coming because none of them can get through the barrier. Meanwhile, KB’s ship has been hit and is crashing back to the planet. Fern reveals the switch destroys the barrier and she, Wim, and Wim’s father all try to pull it, knowing it’s their only hope for help.
Jod uses the lightsaber and a little bit of Force powers to hold them at bay. It’s revealed Jod was trained slightly by a Jedi before she was hunted down, so he has enough ability to perform parlor tricks that will work against his enemies not too familiar with the Force. Once the lightsaber is knocked from his hands, Wim grabs it to try to fight him. Using his Force abilities, he stops it but Fern comes to Wim’s aid. Meanwhile, Wim’s father has nearly reached the switch. Jod tries to hold them both off, but Fern’s mother, who to this point has been opposed to destroying the barrier because it protects her daughter, finally helps at Fern’s pleading because the barrier was no longer protecting her daughter.
Down Comes the Barrier
Once the barrier comes down, here comes the cavalry. X-Wing fighters representing the New Republic arrive and quickly and easily take down the Frigate and the rest of the pirates. Jod knows he’s defeated and decides to stay in the Supervisor tower watching the New Republic descend on the planet. Meanwhile, the kids and their parents rush to where the Onyx Cinder crashed to find KB.

When they arrive, she’s below the ship and seemingly unconscious. Fern, Wim and Neel rush to wake her up. She arouses and asks them if they win. They tell her they did and all share a celebratory hug. SM-33 walks out of the ship and reveals he helped it crash land into a safe place (the school) to keep KB alive. Their parents pull them to safety as the ship is still hanging in a precarious position. As they walk back to the elevator, Wim watches the battle seeing the adventure he had been wanting and smiling while his father continuously calls for him.
Rating
This show hit every note it needed to hit exactly when it needed to hit them. The kids were naive because of their sheltered existence, but their exposure to the dangers of the outside world helped them grow. The directors really showed what they can do with child actors given the growth as actors we saw in Fern, KB and Neel. The actor who played Wim didn’t show as much growth, but he nailed certain parts of Wim’s personality that helped viewers care more about the character.
Despite this being a series “for kids,” it introduced some of the darkest elements ever seen in Star Wars. Few things are as dark as realizing a planet has an army of children. Plus, it made a nice callback to one of the darkest moments of the prequel trilogy when Jod ignited the lightsaber while approaching the kids and their families just like Anakin did when slaughtering the younglings.
This series managed to excel in ways Acolyte failed when it comes to feeling new and fresh while still being Star Wars. Admittedly, my expectations for this series were low, but it excelled every step of the way. The finale gets five stars.
