A REGULAR SAMARITAN
Georgie and Mandy have trouble finding time for each other due to work and parenthood. Meanwhile, Georgie starts going to church while also trying to get more business for Jim’s tie shop.
Parental Struggles
Like many married couples, Georgie and Mandy want some “us time.” Any parent knows that can be a struggle. Unfortunately, Mandy has to work at the diner to try to support the family and Georgie is on call with the tow truck. Georgie takes Cici to see Mandy at work, but the diner is packed and she’s unable to appreciate their visit. She tries to get some “us time” with Georgie after work, but he gets called to help a woman who has broken down with a flat tire.
While helping the woman, named Valerie, she talks about how her church is helpful to her. He thinks she’s like his mother with how much she’s praising her church. Since her spare tire is already on her car, he tows her to the shop and fixes it in the morning. When she returns, she invites him to her church that teaches prosperity. This inspires Georgie while presenting multiple temptations.
Church’s Greed
Georgie, who throughout most of Young Sheldon opposed a lot of his mother’s religious temperament, likes the idea of prosperity and decides to go to the church. Mandy and her family decide not to go as Sunday is Mandy’s only day to sleep in, her father just doesn’t want to go and her mother is Catholic despite not going to church herself. Georgie goes and is able to convince the pastor to allow Jim’s shops to fix the church vans when they need work.
It’s an interesting and humorous take on those who use religion for their own personal gain. Georgie isn’t really spiritual, he just likes the idea that God wants him to be prosperous. Despite Georgie’s clear attempt to take advantage of the pastor, the pastor is proud of him for seeking money. It’s very reminiscent of Joel Osteen and his not-so-Christian church. Meanwhile, Valerie is enjoying spending time with Georgie and makes a move on him while putting away chairs after a Bible study.
Mandy’s Wrath
While Georgie is going to this church, it’s causing a further strain on his marriage. Mandy, and her mother, both know Georgie doesn’t have a lot of free time and think he should be spending as much time with Mandy and Cici as possible. Still, this causes further issues when Georgie and Mandy try to have “us time” and instead fight over their mother’s quirks and personalities.
Eventually, Mandy realizing she’s in agreement with her mother leads her to head to the Bible study to support Georgie. When she arrives, Valerie kisses Georgie who immediately pulls away saying he’s a “married man.” Mandy steps in and punches Valerie and drags Georgie out of there. Lucky for him, Mandy saw him pull away as she makes it clear that’s the only reason he’s still standing. It’s clear that Georgie won’t be returning to that prosperity church ever again.
Rating
This was one of the funnier episodes of the series I’ve seen so far. I’ve never been a fan of “prosperity preachers” who purposely misinterpret the Bible for their own gains. It was rather enjoyable to see Georgie take advantage of them using their own tactics, even though they seem glad he is. Plus, I rather enjoy the humorous takes on three of the deadly sins presented in this episode: greed, lust and wrath.
Still, this overall series hasn’t found a very good footing. Being the third series in what’s becoming a beloved franchise makes it impossible not to compare it to its predecessors. This series just doesn’t hang with The Big Bang Theory or Young Sheldon, and I really don’t know what it needs to do to find that footing. It’s still got the rest of the season to figure it out, and I hope it does.
